The Floodway (link gives arial map and other info), nicknamed "Duff's Ditch", was built by Duff Roblin back in 60's when he was the premier of Manitoba. His idea was to build a large 37 km 'ditch' to help take the Red River's flow around the city during the spring thaw. He was mocked and criticized for it at the time. But his foresight has saved the city billions of dollars in flood damages! We're glad that he built it.

Floodway
As of last week Saturday morning, the floodway gates opened and the water is flowing through making its way into Lake Winnipeg. (For those of you who don't know...the Red River flows from south to north.) We live just minutes from the Floodway that begins in the southern end of Wpg and joins back up with the Red River in the Lockport area, which is about 20 km north of the city limits.

Hey, cool! I found it on Google Maps just fine, but dry. It's neat to see these pictures! I was wondering if that was a walking trail by it on what I saw on Google Maps.
Wow, that's a big "ditch"!
